The Thursday Murder Club

 *Book Review*

**Author- Richard Osman

*Genre- Murder mystery

**Rating- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Four residents of Cooper Chase retirement village get down to solve the murder of a property developer. Oh wait, the mean age of your detectives is 80.

Let the game begin!

ou all are familiar with that absolute comfort of eating a home cooked meal by your grandmother and no fine dining restaurant can beat that, ever. Coming back home and sitting with them, listening to the stories from their past and reliving all those golden memories, cherishing their little joys.

This book is all that and much more.

Elizabeth, Joyce , Ron and Ibrahim are a tight pack who have this little thing called The Thursday Murder Club. Yes it obvious that they sit down on Thursdays every week.

Ofcourse it is not a Rho beta Kappa sorority or fraternity, duh!

And yet they are none of those waiting for their days to come and rest in eternal peace. So whatever time they have in their hands, they want to utilise it in the best way. And no, that doesn't mean origami, knitting pattern or Japanese theatre. We are talking about unsolved murders and hidden bodies.

So please, don't underestimate my gang! 😤😤

My dear oldies are no Captain America so certainly it is a slow burn. And that's why you connect with all residents of Cooper Chase so well. Like you always knew them. Just like your own grandparents.

Its never boring to learn about their exciting past young lives as all of them had interesting careers.

It is so funny to watch them trying their best to sound politically correct and woke all the time and on the other occasions admitting their ignorance about latest technologies.

One of the diary entries of Joyce about Tinder and Grindr is particularly a riot.

It is heartwarming to see them bonding, gossiping and being each other's pillar of support all the time.

Hey did I tell you Mary Lennox's granddaughter just had a baby and he's called River. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

I would never use the word ' Quirky' for Elizabeth, the one leading on the front line. That word is bland, young adult-ish and very basic to be honest . A former Intelligence agent, her resources are deep and expand in all directions, which is very convenient for the premise. Yet, it is charming to watch her manipulating two young police detective who are literally at their wits end about how to dodge the Club members without being disrespectful.

All of them are great but Elizabeth is a badass.

But above all lies the easy 'British'-ness of the entire novel. If you have watched ' The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' movies, you'll understand the reference.

The cultural background has immense impact in the plot and how it all ends for each of the characters, including the murderer. British people have a peculiar air about themselves which guides their behaviour and way of live, including humour. I strongly believe, the author could pull up a witty murder mystery with genuinely hilarious characters because of this cultural backbone.

To all those who always wanted a murder mystery, without a psychopath serial killer, abusive parents, human trafficking boyfriend and women getting tortured on every other pages, this book is a boon.

I am so tired of reading all those tropes mentioned above.

And think of the perfect mystery with hilarious main characters, it cannot get any better.
